Eduardo With His Daughters, Fernanda, Caroline, Karalãini. March 2007.
“I leave here to work because here, life isn’t easy…. I am away for 8 months. And the children; there are times when I don’t see them growing up…I am always worried living so far away from my family. But what can I do? This place doesn’t give us opportunity. [o lugar não ajuda] Here I work on the farm, but the farm doesn’t give a future to anyone. I like my family a lot, so I always want to be at their side. Anything that they need I am here for them, but we don’t have the money for me to always physically be here. So I need to live both here and there until I save enough money so that I don’t have to leave anymore…until then, it is the life of here and there. I go to São Paulo, the sugar plantations…I send all the money to my family. So, when I return, I come with the money we made to buy things for them. And so I arrive, rest about 15 days, and begin the struggle on the farmland here. When April arrives I pack my things and head for the sugar plantations again. When I am in bed, sometimes I start to cry of longing for them…There are times when I receive news that they are not well and I get really worried. But I can’t come and visit because I lose the little that I earn on the travel costs. I need all that I earn to buy clothes, school supplies, and all the things that they need. I am not able to give them everything they ask for, but I give whatever I can. And it is not easy to work like this and to care for my family and live far away. Everyone knows this. Dear family, I want to say that you should be certain in the bottom of your hearts that I love you, and even when I am far from you, you are always in the bottom of my heart.”
